At other times he is flirtatious, witty, angry and observant. Confined to their country cottage with its picturebook garden, Deryck, Joyce and their endlessly entertaining small dog, make the best they can of their fate.<br />In this Diary, Joyce has captured Deryck's thoughts and feelings so acutely that we become painfully aware of how closely she shares his decline. We are given a picture of a couple, still in love after decades of marriage, facing the ultimate separation. There are times when it is so starkly honest that we cannot help but feel the aching muscles, the struggles for breath, the exhausting battle merely to stay alive.<br />The facts of this simply-told narrative speak more than adequately for themselves. It is in this very simplicity and honestly that the book is so rare.The plain unvarnished truth is given extraordinary power, because it is not diluted by jokes or euphemisms or any refusal to face the grim reality.<br />To read this is to understand just what it's like to live and die with this disease.
